The SM occurrence is located on the north western slope of Ragged Mountain, approximately 8.5 kilometres north east of Sooke.
The area is underlain by the contact of the coeval Eocene Metchosin Volcanics and Sooke Gabbro intrusives. The volcanics consist of basalt and the intrusives consist of olivine and augite gabbro.
Locally, brecciated rocks at the contact contain pyrite and chalcopyrite in calcite gangue. Drill core samples are reported to contain rare native silver and gold (Assessment Report 10571).
In 1972, E. Murphy completed a program of prospecting, geological sampling and four diamond drill holes, totalling 12.0 metres. In 1979, two more diamond drill holes, totalling 18.5 metres, were completed. A core sample, assayed 10,000 parts per million titanium (Assessment Report 7475).
In 1980 through 1984, previous diamond drill holes were continued. In 1982, a sample of drill core (81-3) assayed 10.3 grams per tonne silver. Other drill core samples, from the same year, assayed up to 0.34 grams per tonne gold and greater than 0.5 per cent titanium (Assessment Report 10571). In 1984, one 40 centimetre section of drill core assayed 0.41 grams per tonne gold and 3.09 grams per tonne silver (Assessment Report 12446, page 16).
